The ∆Triangle Gallery is pleased to announce the first solo exhibition in Russia by Nebojša Despotović ( born 1982 in Belgrad, lives and works in Berlin).

Exhibition consists of works of different periods. Dedicated to the existential matters of time, memory and oblivion, the artworks compose a palette of images, which, like Proust’s madeleines, bring to the surface images, situations, scents, and sensations which would otherwise be buried in the inner recesses of memory. In fact, the works result from images that has its beginnings in history books, old photos, old encyclopedias, and schoolbooks picked up in flea markets. They are slices of abandoned personal memories which end up in the hands of people distant in time and space, and yet there is nothing in common between those who look at the images and those who are portrayed. This remoteness allows the visual concentration of what time usually dilutes.

Despotović’s research, which pays particular attention to the definition and representation of the concept of identity, only apparently saves these images from the oblivion of time: covered and altered with painting they acquire an indefinite and outdated character which takes them back to a remote past.

In 2006 Nebojsa Despotovic obtained a bachelor degree in painting at Accademia di Belle Arti of Venice. In 2011 he won the residence at the prestigious Bevilacqua La Masa Italian Foundation in Venice and has been selected at the 54a Venice Biennial to represent the Italian Art Academies. In 2012 he won the Euromobil Under 30 Prize at Art Fair in Bologna and the Mango Young Artist Award of Swab in Barcelona Fair. In february 2014 his second solo show Silent Fracture at Boccanera Gallery in Trento, was curated by Maja Cirić (curator of the Serbian Pavillion at 52a Venice Biennial and commissioner at the Serbian Pavillion at 55th edition).
